How to Join Slack Messaging

First you will get an email, asking you to join. The email that gets invited is the one that slack will use for it’s login, so make sure we have the correct email for you.

The link will take you to a join page where you will enter your username and a password

You are now in the Slack messaging area.

On the left menu area, you see your own username and a little green dot beside it that shows you are in “on slack.” Below, you will see a list of channels, as of now, there are only the 2 default channels, “general” and “random.”

The channel in green is the channel you are currently on. You may post to the channels available to you and everyone who is in that channel will see your post.

Under that, you can see the other people who are signed up for this Slack messaging room/area. You can click on a persons name to send them a private message. You can send them a message whether they are online or not.

In either the private message or the general channel, you hit enter to send.

At the top of the page, you can see where you are, whether it’s in a channel

The icons on top will give you information about the slack channel and network.

Note:

When you type an “@ ” symbol, and the first letter of a username, it will give you options to “shout out” at a user. Also, if you type @channel, everyone on the channel will be notified. A notification consists of an email to the email you provided if you are offline, or a desktop notification if your select to receive them.

You can find your account preferences under the your name in the upper left corner. When you click it, you will get a drop down menu where you can customize your information.

There are the preferences where you can decide how you want to be notified, if you want to be notified and what you want your screen to look like.
